Someone asked me recently “If you weren’t running the bookstore, what would you want to be doing?” Gardening!

I love to plan, plant, nurture, and harvest. For me, gardening is therapy. It’s (usually) quiet, it gives me time to think, ponder, and glory in the beauty of this world we live in.

‘God Almighty first planted a garden. And, indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures.’ Sir Francis Bacon.

Growing food for my family is so satisfying, I find joy in preserving the harvest, big or small, and counting my blessings along with the quarts of fruits and vegetables. ( I actually asked for dirt for Mother’s Day, and if there is an empty spot of ground, I am always thinking about what to plant there.)

When I can’t be in my garden, I enjoy books about gardening, I find so many good ideas, tips, tricks, and fun, that it always inspires me. “The Incredible Edible Landscape” by Joy Bossi & Karen Bastow was no exception. It’s full of good ideas, tips, planting guides, references, and even recipes! I was reminded that I have some nicely ‘cured’ bales of straw at home that would make a perfect garden spot for some of my vegetables this year. Come in and pick up a copy and see what inspires you.

If vegetable seeds aren’t your thing, what kind of seeds do you like to sow? My children are avid readers, thankfully, but sometimes hesitant to pick up a different kind of book. I have been known to leave ‘my’ book laying around the house, to see who will pick it up and read a page or two, or the whole book. ‘Planting’ books around where they are available to your kids gives them the opportunity to read something different, without any pressure.

Not everything in my garden grows in straight rows (just ask my family). I am a firm believer that plots should always have a few twists. Something unexpected is always fun. Yesterday afternoon I picked up “Road to Grace” by Richard Paul Evans. This is the third installment in the “Walk” series. Wow! So good, full of twists, turns, and inspiration! I finished the book last night, so it’s a quick read, perfect for a lazy afternoon, beside the garden!

Days Like Today . . .

I just want to curl up on the couch with a good book or two, have a pot of soup going, maybe some nice music in the background . . .
